Coughing up blood is the spitting up of blood or bloody mucus from the lungs and throat (respiratory tract). You may cough up small amounts of bright red blood, or frothy blood-streaked sputum (saliva and phlegm). The blood is usually from your lungs and is often the result of prolonged coughing or a chest infection. The most common reasons for coughing up blood are: a prolonged, severe cough a chest infection - this is more likely if your sputum is discoloured or contains pus, you have a fever, or you have a tight feeling in your chest bronchiectasis etc. Seeing blood when you cough can be alarming, whether it?s a large or small amount. Coughing up blood is nearly always a symptom of a disease. Depending on the cause, coughing up blood can be treated in several ways. If simple throat irritation due to excessive coughing is the culprit, over-the-counter throat lozenges and cough suppressants may be enough.
