My sister is a hypo thyroid patient. Her gland on one side is swollen, plus she has flu like symptoms like extremely sore throat, sneezing, running nose. Does she have thyroiditis or she has flu? Last time she got the same symptoms one doc said she had viral while the other said thyroiditis and was given a steroid. She was miserable for 15 days. Can some one help to diagnose it whether I shud take her to a gp or an endocrinologist? And what meds shud she take?

Hello, thanks for the query. Usually flu like symptoms or viral infections of upper respiratory system can occur in any one. So it is possible she has viral infection. Secondly as regards the thyroid swelling, I need to know following details: her present tsh level, t3 & t4 levels. Anti tpo antibodies level to know if she has hashimoto's thyroiditis.(ht) if you have done these tests, please come back with details. Plus tell about what is the present treatment with dosage. Also whether a usg of thyroid has been done? Thanks.
