Dear Lybrate user, seems like your friend is going through a tough time and hence is using sleeping pills and alcohol as an escape to get away from it. It will lead to certain neurological problems, if continued in this manner. You may ask your friend to consult with me online for further information and questions.

It is a toxic dose of sedatives. The effect depends on how much alcohol he took and type of alcohol also matters. "unlikely" there will be a permanent damage with sedatives. Sedative reversal techniques are present and hospital should be doing it. Once he is well, don't hesitate to meet a mental health professional.

He might survive most likely. He might have cognitive changes and more importantly he should be consulted with a psychiatrist to get evaluated for the behavior. Good luck.
