Dear Lybrate user, cyst formation occurs due to hormonal imbalance in some cases and its very common to see asymptomatic cysts accidentally noticed while getting routine ultrasound done. For small (<3 cm) simple cysts, no treatment needs to be done. They form and disappear themselves without any treatment whatsoever. For cysts 3 to 8 cm, ultrasound monitoring needs to be done, but here also, no medication work for dissolving cysts. They may resolve spontaneously in some cases. But there is need to monitor via ultrasound. If persistent, laproscopic removal is advised. For cysts more than 8 cm, thorough evaluation needed. Blood tests to rule out ovarian cancer, teratoma or germ cell tumor advised. Removal of cyst after confirming diagnosis. However, there is another entity called endometriotic cysts, these contain collected, hemorrhage, clotted blood which increases over time. Such cysts, if over 3-4 cm, need to be removed preferabbly laproscopically and all the endometriotic nodules and involved peritoneum need to be removed.
