My grandpa met an accident few days ago due to which he had a minor fracture on his wrist. Doctor did plaster and all. After that lockdown started so he was unable to meet the doctor again. He had little bit pain in body after that. So one of our neighbour pharmacist advised him to take dailycal 500 mg. But I am worried if it may harm him resulting in upset stomach and other gastrointestinal problems. So I want to know if it would be good for him to take dailycal 500 mg or not? If not than which calcium medicine would be good for him? His age is 76 and he also have some urinary problems so he is taking tamsulosin 0.4 mg + dutasteride 0.5 mg.

If the patient is not comfortable with dailycal then better avoid, many formulations of calcium are available so preferably avoid carbonate salt of calcium and take whatever your ortho doctor had advised. Follow advice of doctor and not pharmacist.

Calcium tabs. Should not be taken continuously for a long time. He should do physiotherapy for the parts out of plaster cast. Look after the urinary problem.

Hello lybrate-user: from the information you have provided I understand that he has probably got an osteoporotic colle's fracture for which he has been given a plaster and has got bph additionally. I want to make a few things clear for you here: 1. Him having a wrist fracture at 76 years means he has got an osteoporosis (weak bones) for which he needs proper evaluation and treatment. 2. If not addressed properly and he falls again he might sustain a more serious fracture next time (hip or spine) now coming to your query, daily cal contains calcium carbonate which is well tolerated by most individuals, however some patients complain of gastrointestinal symptoms, including constipation, gas, flatulence, and bloating. Precautions: 1. Make sure he takes it with meals. 2. Do not take any other medicine within 2 hours of taking your calcium. 3. You need a different calcium preparation if he is taking any kind of antacids (rantac, pantop etc) or has got inflammatory bowel disease. Contact me in case you need help with the treatment. Thanks.

Doctor who applied plaster must have already advised you some calcium supplements, so please check that first. And if not you can give calcium supplement for bone strength. Plaster to be removed around 6 weeks from date of application.
