My mother is suffering from swallowing problem she was given myospaz which helped and she was able to eat but soon her dose were reduced she is having same pain. Her neck/head xray is normal, her throat endoscopy is normal, her stomach endoscopy has some gastric issues but gastrantologist told dysphagia is not due to stomach. Is this neck muscles causing pain? Or its neuro problems are thinking to go for mri and barium swallow. Please advise.

Hello. This looks more like a neuromuscular incoordination which is very essential for swallowing food. This is more common in the older age. So a mri neck/brain to rule out any central lesion of the brain in consultation with a neurosurgeon would be a good idea. Also she is not anaemic which can you know by her blood tests. A barium swallow can also be done, but a ct scan neck would be more helpful if there are any obstructive lesions in the cricopharyngeal region. Good luck.

Dear Lybrate user also mentioned age, weight, duration of the dysphagia and whether it was associated with solid or liquid food or both, any regurgitation during or after a feed. To rule out any neurolgical causes of dysphagia needs detail physical examination before any radiological investigations. Videofluroscopic swallowing study (vfss) or the fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (fees) will be good for further assessment.
