Mirtazapine is a good medicine for depression. It can be used long term. But it can increase appetite, so a diet control and sufficient daily exercise is a must. It doesn't have dependence or addiction. The dose can be reduced if there are no depressive symptoms for the last 12 months. There is no tolerance to mirtazapine. If you feel the depressive symptoms are reappearing, then the dose is not sufficient.

Otherwise it can increase the chances of diabetes and dyslipidemia - not directly, indirectly by increasing weight and not exercising and dieting. It may not cause dependence directly but tolerance may develop in due course. Tolerance may be to side effects rather than antidepressant effect.
