Hello, I had mild cold with nasal congestion, sore throat on 17 september, then loss of smell and taste happened saw doctor took antibiotics and vitamins. Did rtcpr test also which came negative. Regained little smell by 6th day. Today is my 24th day, regained smell like 60% and getting mild flavours of food not getting the full aroma of the food I am having. When will I recover fully? And still I have nasal congestion. Stuffy nose. What can be done for that? Is nasal irrigation good for stuffy nose? And is mecovon-od tablet good for smell sensation? Kindly response as I am worried.

1. Do saline gargles daily (preferably twice). 2. Whenever possible do steam inhalation also. 3. Cover your nose and mouth with hanky for at least 30 sec when you go in dusty areas also when you go in and out of ac. As our nose is the most sensitive part of our body, when there is temperature difference between two rooms or inside n outside, then if we not protect our nose, it gets affected. 4. Drink hot liquids --hot liquids relieve nasal congestion, prevent dehydration, and soothe the uncomfortably inflamed membranes that line your nose and throat. Homeopathic treatment has very encouraging results. Consult online for details.

Reduced sensation of smell can due to 2 main reasons. Obstruction of odor molecules from reaching the nerves or a problem with nerves themselves. The obstruction can be relieved to a good extent by the nasal irrigation. But if the nerves have got damaged due to the viral attack you had, may be it will take time to regain the senses. In that case mecovonod will be helpful. In short, if you do irrigation as well as take the tablets, the effect will be good and should take care of both the porblems.

Dear Lybrate user, its great that your rtpcr test is negative now. You are a corona warrior in true sense. It may take some more time to regain sense of taste. Continue taking balanced diet, good rest and sleep, gargles, milk with turmeric and regular follow up. Please communicate with me after appointment for medication advice. Thanks and regards.
