Hi. Iam 13 week pregnant. During my first ultrasound scan I was told that everything is normal. But my doctor informed us about CVS test (chronic villus testing) which can be preformed to check down syndrome. And she told that it is not a compulsion so I need to know that is this test mandatory during pregnancy? And iam 23 year old with my first pregnancy.

Not every pregnant woman needs a cvs in pregnancy. Only in cases of high risk factors like previous anomalous babies or a strong family history, is cvs advised. For all low risk women, a blood test like double marker test, is done at 11 to 13 weeks to screen out women at high risk of having a down's syndrome baby. Only if the risk is high in this test is an invasive test like amniocentesis prescribed.
