My 1.5 year old son has having difficulty in passing stools since 3-4 days. He passed very hard stools and takes effort to pass stool. We have given him bonnisan syrup but it has little effect on the bowel movement. In the past whenever he passed hard stools we have given him bonnisan and gripe water and the stool movement has improved in a day or two.

Hard stools are common in this age group, first dietary changes are needed with high water content and green leafy vegetables, bottle feeding of milk should be avoided, you can also apply lignocaine jelly to his anus before passing stools which will give him some relief while passing stools, if there is still difficulty then he can be started on oral medications.
