What is the difference between a pilon ankle fracture that fractured both lower tibia and fibula vs a bimalleolar fracture? Can a pilon fracture be a bimalleolar fracture?

Tibial plafond fracture or pilon fracture is a fracture of the distal end of the tibia most commonly associated with comminution, intra-articular extension(means extending to your joint) and significant soft tissue injury(skin and underlying soft tissue wounds). This often requires adequate waiting before definitive surgery if skin conditions or swelling is large.Initially we might manage with slab or an external fixation for shorter span and later plate tibia. Bimalleolar fractures means both malleolus are fractured ie ; medial and Lateral malleolus. These are usually less complicated and can be operated early with screws/wires for medial side(Tibia) and plating for Lateral side(fibula)
