My son is 2 years 2 months. Last week he required a blood transfusion for the first time as his hb dipped to 5.8. (note: he was under antibiotics before the test as was having some bacteria infection) I am e trait and my husband is beta thalassemia trait. Not sure yet if my son is a carrier of both or not. Hb electrophoresis is done but since he is maintaining foetal hb 57% so unable to get a conclusive report. His hb e is 32%. Currently he is under folic acid (folvite) and hydroxyurea medication. I wanted to know what steps should I take further so that his hb increases and he leads a healthy life ahead.

Since it is a genetic disease. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is the treatment of choice. You should continue folvite &hydroxyurea.
