What is the role of biopsy in kidney issues? Case: i've got minimal lesion glomerulonephritis from early childhood. It was frequent till I was 13 n then reassurance stopped. The condition has resurfaced after 14 years without edema symptom (i'm 27 years now). There has been 6 reoocurances in last 3 years alone, 4 since last year after I recovered from covid. Condition responds well to low dosage prednisolone (10 mg for 4 days n later reducing dosage reduces for few more days). I use dipstick protein test. But the no. Of repeated occurrence in last couple of years has started to bother me. Should I go for biopsy or stick to medication that has worked for me so far n not worried about recurrence? Additional info: my creatinine level fluctuates around: 0.7 to 0.9 (based to two blood tests last year)

ideally you should undergo biopsy to know exactly what is happening within the kidney. you probably have a steroid dependent disease , so would benefit from alternate immunosuppression

Hi lybrate-user, sorry to know about the chronic disease you are having. Anyways, biopsy gives us the knowledge about the current physical status of the kidneys, where as ultrasound and blood, urine test gives us indirect evidence of status of kidneys. As you are having chrn gn, it will be better to undergo a periodic biopsy.

Get renal biopsy again with electron microscopy also. We have better medication now beyond steroids to make disease into remission.

Medicines should work in my opinion. But in case of recurrences, ask your nephrologist if you need a change of drug for maintainance.

Kidney biopsy should be done in your case to find out the etiology of kidney disease. Once the cause is clear, your nephrologist will pin point towards the targeted therapy. Kidney biopsy is mandatory to diagnose the proteinuric kidney disease in adults.
