Autism is a disorder where children have difficulty in communicating and in understanding and expressing emotions. The basic nature of their brain cannot be changed with medications. Instead, children are given speech therapy, behavioural therapy and various other forms of therapy to be able to function in the world. So that they may explain their feelings and needs, and make lasting relationships with other people in society. The treatment is mainly various kinds of therapy. The frequency of therapy has to be very frequent and prolonged. For years. Consulting a child neurologist and psychologist will be best so that guidance regarding therapy can be given. No drugs are known to treat the condition. They can help in certain aggressive behaviours, or other associated behavioural problems. Also, it is important to know the natural course of the condition. The condition itself is permanent, what therapy teaches the child is how to integrate with and function in society. So expectations of parents need to be realistic according to the condition. The child neurologist or psychologist will be able to counsel you regarding this.

Dear Lybrate user please visit a child development center nearby your place, as it is recommended to start with occupational and speech therapy with the child. Autism spectrum disorder (asd) is a neurodevelopmental disorder which impacts the child speech, language and communication areas. As you have mentioned that the child is not able to understand the instructions and is very stubborn, there can be a possibility that due to speech and language deficit he may not be able to communicate his needs and wants. We need to understand his style of communication and then build on the skills so that he can learn to communicate well. You may also join programs for parenting children with asd. As a parent we need to start looking at child's strengths too. A occupational therapist or a developmental therapist may help you to recognize those strengths and help breaking unhealthy behaviours of the child.
