1. Hepatitis b is a type of hepatitis which is caused by hepatitis b virus. The incubation period is 60-150 days, early symptoms-. A) the person is mostly asymptomatic and is detected to have infection during screening test prior to blood transfusion. B) in some patients the symptoms are like hepatitis a jaundice, malaise, fatigue, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, pain abdomen 2. The virus is transmitted through contact with infected blood/blood product, transfusion of infected blood, dialysis, contaminated syringe/needle/skin pricks/tatooing, sexual contact with infected person, homosexuality and from infected mother to un born child (foetus), 3. The person is mostly asymptomatic and is detected to have infection during screening test prior to blood transfusion. In some patients the symptoms are like hepatitis a 4. Blood test of the infected person is positive for hbsag. 5. In most of the cases the virus automatically gets cleared from the blood without any treatment and without affecting liver 6. In some patients the virus remains in the blood for long time and causes chronic hepatitis b infection leading to liver damage by cirrhosis of liver/carcinoma of liver. Persistence of hbsag for more than 6 months is known as chronic hepatitis b infection. 7. Patient has to be treated by antiviral drug after consulting hepatologist/gastro enterologist.
