I am a father of a two-year-old daughter. My daughter has six fingers in her right hand. I don?t know how this happened because no one in my family had ever been born with this condition. Doctor please help me in knowing the causes of polydactyly?

Polydactyly, the condition where a baby is born with an extra finger or toe, generally occurs because of genetic mutations. But this is not the only condition as there are nonfamilial cases as well. These include: 1) women with diabetes having children, 2) children with lower birth weights 3) birth order also plays role (e.g. First- or second-born), 4) children born to fathers having lower educational levels, 5) children are born to mothers who have upper respiratory tract infections. This generally occurs during the first three months of pregnancy, 6) child whose mother had a history of epilepsy.
