Yes, antidepressants are not to take life long always. It entirely depends on your diagnosis. Also as you mentioned you are taking nexito forte that has clonazepam, a benzodiazepine which is addictive in nature. It is necessary to taper it slowly with the guidance of a good psychiatrist. Also if cognitive behavioural therapy can be considered inspite of taking medicines for long term. It seems that people do not take therapy sessions because of cost issues but therapy has long term effects. If you see long term cost benefit ratio, then therapy is not a bad option.

Dear lybrate-user, I want to know the diagnosis for which nexito forte was given. Most of the major depressive disorders are treated with nexito for 6 months or so and stop. Very rare diagnosis needs long term antidepressant. You can stop it if you have recovered from depression fully. Discuss with your psychiatrist. It is possible to stop it.

If you feel like your depression or anxiety or for whatever reason it was started, is no longer an issue you can certainly stop it. However, you may need guidance from your psychiatrist regarding how to do so to avoid withdrawal which some patients face. A gradual taper down in the dosage is recommended. If you need to consult us for a second opinion kindly do so with the help and guidance of the Lybrate staff.
