If a pregnant woman has hbd-punjab trait and her partner does not have any hemoglobin-related issues, the risk of the baby having a hemoglobin disorder will depend on the hemoglobin genotype of both parents. If the father has a normal hemoglobin genotype (e.g. Hbaa), then the baby will inherit one copy of the hbd-punjab gene from the mother and one copy of the normal gene from the father, making the baby a carrier of the hbd-punjab trait. In this case, the baby will not have any health problems related to the hbd-punjab trait. However, if the father also has a hemoglobin trait or disorder, such as sickle cell trait or thalassemia trait, then the risk of the baby having a hemoglobin disorder increases. In this case, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider and undergo appropriate genetic testing and counseling to assess the risk and make informed decisions about the pregnancy.
