I was playing with a cricket ball when a street dog snatched it. I brought it back but later while playing I suffered a skin scratch. Later that night I started experiencing throat ache and since today noon I am experiencing fever and tiredness. I took cefixime and paracetamol 500 mg as precautionary measure as I am a chronic allergic rhinitis patient. Is it possible I am infected with rabies due to street dog saliva?

Any organism, when enters human body has a certain time before causing symptoms called incubation period. It will not happen like in the morning you were exposed and in the night you'll be having symptoms. It takes at least about 1 day and varies for different organisms.

If there is bleeding from the wound site. Then you should go to emergency department for arv, otherwise it will be ok. Wash the wound site with soap and also keep an eye on the dog.

Carefully re enact the incidence again mentally. If you feel that 1. It was a street dog and no way you can watch it for 10 days for its normalcy. 2. The saliva smeared on cricket ball some how entered inside the open skin by giving entry to your blood. If answer to both questions is 'yes' or'can't say. There is chance of contamination of blood with rabies germs. Then it is safe to complete the 5 dose course of rabies vaccine. You may also personally discuss with your doctor. The symptoms you got afterwards are no wy important in taking the decision.
