My daughter aged 8 month is born with congenital heart defect. Her recent 2d echo report state that (1) acyanotic congenital heart disease-left to right shunt ostium secundum atrial septal defect (8-9mm). (2) dilated right atrium & ventricle. (3) no pulmonic stenosis/patent duct us arteriosus. (4) intact inter ventricular septum. (5) sites solitus. (6) levocardia. She has no feeding problem till date except reconcurrent cough. Is open heart surgery or device closure necessary to close the hole at these 8 month age? heard that most infant asd close itself by the time of age of 2 years.

Do not be upset with a 9 mm asd. One has to wait till about 5 years of age to decide the appropriate treatment. In any case this size of defect does not warrant surgery. So whether an umbrella device needs to be used later in life will depend on the degree of left to right shunt. Please raise her like the upbringing of any other normal child. All the best.

You can wait till 2 years of age. But keep the baby in regular follow up with serial echo 6 monthly to see any bad effect on the lung due to increased flow from the defect. Chances of closure in 8-9 mm asd is less. In case asd less than 8 mm 80% chance of closure is there.
