Hello, Thanks for the query. Madam, I have seen the details mentioned. What you have given is very general information, based on which there is no way to decide what is the actual situation. I need to know your current T3, T4 & TSH levels as well as the same levels when you were diagnosed to have hypothyroidism. In case of hypothyroidism heart rate is usually slower than normal. There is no increased heart rate at all. Also let me know why did you stop the medication? Had you checked the thyroid profile at that time? Did the concerned doctor advise you to stop the treatment? Please come back with all the details along with your weight, height, dietary pattern and extent of daily exercise. On going through all the information I will be able to advise. Thanks.

Dear lybrate-user, your test done before starting thyrox 75 ug show only subclinical hypothyroidism - that is t3 and t4 are normal and tsh shows only borderline elevation. Your weight of 77 kg is about 20 kg more than your ideal body weight of about 65-67 kg. I feel that you should focus on a strict low carbohydrate high protein diet, exercise for an hour every day and reduce weight by 1 kg per month to your ideal body weight over the next 2-3 years. Check tpo antibodies and if they show a high value, you need to follow up free t4 and tsh values once in 6 months. If you are antibody negative you need only follow up after 1 year. There is no need to take thyrox now Dr. m s seshadri.

Hello, Thanks for the query. I have gone through the details mentioned. Madam, it appears you have subclinical hypothyroidism, because for diagnosing hypothyroidism TSH needs to be > 10 mU/L. However, you also have a problem of excessive menstrual bleeding, which may possibly be due to hypothyroidism. But taking Thyronorm (dosage not mentioned) is not going to stop bleeding. For that you will also need to take some hormonal tablets. Thyronorm is given to increase your T4 levels and in turn reduce TSH & bring it to the specified range(0.5 to 5 mU/L) To correct TSH levels it takes at least 4 weeks of treatment. So please continue the treatment and also ask your gyncologist if there is any other tablet required to control bleeding. As regards hypothyroidism treatment needs to be continued for life time. Another important aspect is that with a BMI(Body Mass Index)of 38.73 kgs /Sq meter(Normal < 23kgs/Sq meter) you having almost grade 3 obesity. Your ideal body weight should be about 36 kgs considering your height. So there is an excess of over 24 kgs. This could be due to untreated hypothyroidism. This can also lead to PCOD, which does lead to menstrual irregularities. So apart from correcting hypothyroidism (TSH 3 to 4 mU/L), there is need to work on reducing the weight. So please look at that. If you have any questions please do come back. Thanks.

Madam, thanks for the query. I have seen the details mentioned. A few things need to be clarified. Please let me what are the reasons for checking thyroid functions? Are you having any specific symptoms related to hypothyroidism? Because tsh 6 mu/l does not usually warrant any treatment. Tsh 6 to 9.9 mu/l is considered as subclinical hypothyroidism and invariably no treatment is advised. However, if a person has troublesome symptoms associated with hypothyroidism are present then treatment is initiated. Secondly if tsh is not too high but the anti tpo antibodies are increased then also it is considered as hashimoto's thyroiditis (ht) and treated as hypothyroidism. So please clarify. Usually when tsh goes > 10 mu/l treatment is necessary. Plus to decide the dosage it is essential to know weight, height and t4 levels. If you have any questions please do come back. Thanks.
