Adenoidectomy is the surgery performed for the removal of adenoids in children. It is a short procedure performed by an ear nose and throat (ent) surgeon on an outpatient basis. General anesthesia is used for the surgery that will put your child to sleep.

It is very rare that adenoids regrow if it has been removed via surgery. Adenoidal regrowth occurs more often in children below 5 years of age. It may, however, occur in patients who were treated through medicines.

As a child grows older and crosses 5 years of age, adenoid starts shrinking and by the teenage years, they are almost gone. It may happen that infection develops in your child in his or her growing years. Doctors, however, will prescribe antibiotics, or nasal steroid sprays to kill the infection. If adenoids grow more and symptoms become vital, surgery is performed for its complete removal.
