Blister: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

Last Updated: Dec 10, 2024

What is the treatment?

Blisters are bubble like structures on the surface of the skin. They are small raised areas filled with body fluid like pus, blood, plasma, serum or lymph. Blisters are caused due to burning, freezing, chemical exposure, infection or forceful rubbing. Poorly fitting shoes are the most common reason for their occurrence. They can occur in any part of the body but are mostly seen in toes or under foot areas. Blisters are not generally known to cause any harm but in some cases, they may represent disease processes. Most blisters heal naturally. You can go for treatments and medications if they become too painful.

How is the treatment done?

Some home remedies and over the counter medications can help you in getting rid of them. A blister must not be popped unless medically necessary. Avoid rubbing the blister. A blister plaster is an over the counter protection for your blister. It is a band aid like product that will cover your blister as well as provide cushioning to it. It will keep your blister safe from dirt, water and germs. A blister plaster will also help in relieving the pain you are going through thus, speeding up the process of recovery. Applying the blister plaster as soon as you see any signs of a developing blister will help in achieving your results sooner. Do not remove it until it comes off on its own. You must keep patience while using one because it will take a few days to show results. If the condition persists or your blisters start reddening or bleeding, you must consult a dermatologist as it could be a sign of some skin disease.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

If you experience bubble like structures on the surface of your skin especially foot and toes, you must treat it before it becomes anything serious.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Slight redness, pain or swelling after wearing a pair of poorly fitting shoes is not necessarily blisters. These uncomfortable conditions can be gotten rid off with some foot massage and applying a hot pack.

Are there any side effects?

Blister plaster may cause a little itching in your skin when removed. Other than this, blister treatments are not known to cause any side effects.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

Do not puncture the blister on your own. If it bursts accidently, do not pull off the outer layer of the skin. Keep your skin clean and your blister covered from all the dirt and germs in the environment.

How long does it take to recover?

A blister generally heals in a week or two depending on its severity.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

A pack of blister plasters may cost around ₹800. If you consult a doctor, it may cost between ₹400 and ₹800.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

Blisters may occur again if the same conditions are present.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

There are no alternatives to the treatment. You can just avoid getting blisters by taking care of your feet and adopting a few habits like applying foot cream regularly, wearing comfortable and well fitted shoes and keeping your feet, socks and shoes dry.
