Pregnancy is the period in which there is a development of offspring inside the womb of a woman. Pregnancy is also known by another name i.e., the period of gestation. The pregnancy lasts usually for forty weeks after having the last period. The symptoms of being pregnant are problems with urinating frequently, nausea,  missed periods, hunger, vomiting and tenderness of the breast. You can even prevent pregnancy by taking birth control pills. The changes in the breasts are noticed from the first week after the conception to the time till the delivery of the baby. The period of gestation is divided into three trimesters, i.e., first trimester, second trimester and one third trimester. The complications that are faced during the pregnancy are anemia caused due to the pregnancy, miscarriage, vomiting, gestational diabetes, high blood pressure caused due to the pregnancy and nausea. Pregnancy can also be prevented by the abortion. The changes in the breast are common during the pregnancy. The changes in the breast are caused due to hormonal changes during the pregnancy. Sometimes, due to the changes in the breast, colostrum is leaked during the pregnancy. During the pregnancy, it is common that there is an enlargement of the breasts and also there is soreness of the breast.

In the first trimester of pregnancy, the breast may swell up and there is a tenderness of the breast. The duration of the first trimester pregnancy may be from the first week to thirteen weeks after the pregnancy. There is an enlargement of the breasts during the period of the gestation. The sticking out of the nipples is also felt during the pregnancy.

The period of pregnancy from 14 weeks to 27 weeks is known as the second trimester. During the second trimester of the pregnancy, there is a reduction in the tenderness of the breast as compared to the first trimester. The breasts even get heavier and even bigger. For getting proper support, the woman needs a bigger bra. There is a discharge of a yellowish substance known as colostrum in between the 16th week and 19th week after the pregnancy. Colostrum is a type of yellowish substance that helps in preventing the diseases of the babies. The  yellowish substance indicates that the breasts are becoming ready for breastfeeding. This is a sign that the breasts are getting ready for breastfeeding. The nipples along with the surrounding areas become dark in color along with the increase in its size. On the areola, small bumps are also visible. But these bumps last till the date of delivery. During pregnancy, some women may also get stretch marks on the breasts. The veins of the breast also become clearly visible during the period of the second trimester.

The period of pregnancy from the 28th week till the child birth is known as the third trimester. If there is no leakage of colostrum during the second trimester, then, in such cases, the leakage of colostrum from the breast starts now. There is an enlargement of the breast along with the heaviness of the breast. During this period, you even need a larger bra for getting the proper support.

Things that can be done in order to being normal during the breast changes are as follows:

  • For soaking the leaks, the breast pads can be used inside the bras. There are two types of breast pads available. One type of breast pads can be washed very easily and the second type of breast pads can be used for once and then, it can be thrown. You can select the breast pads according to your comfort
  • Wear a tight bra for getting the proper support at the sides and even at the back if the tenderness or soreness is felt in the breasts. Try to wear cotton bras during the pregnancy as they make you feel very comfortable. Bras that are of the padded shoulder can also be used during the pregnancy.
  • Avoid using the soaps on and around the areas of the nipples. Soaps should be avoided around the areas of nipples because the soaps can make the skin dry around the nipples. So, warm water should be used instead of using the soaps on and around the nipples
  • Wear a sleep bra while sleeping at night. Sleep bra should be soft and light weight for getting support while sleeping
  • Try to air dry your breast while you take a bath for a few minutes.
