First of all, there is nothing like central diabetes mellitus.
Sometimes, excess gh or acth release from pituitary from the tumor may cause hyperglycemia called as secondary diabetes.
Low secretion of adh may cause excessive urination known as diabetes insipidus lead to excessive thirst. But sugar remains normal in the blood. So please be more specific about his illness and give a proper history of what hormones he is taking regularly.

Drink according to your thirst, so become aware of yourself! drink 8-10 glasses of water in a day. Regarding your concerns about diabetes insipidus, or any other health problem, please talk to your doctor and let him examine you and diagnose the problems with clarity. Some tests would be suggested to arrive at some conclusion.
