Typhoid drains almost all of the energy from the body and loses appetite adversely. Following an effective diet after thyroid recovery is very important. Typhoid is a caused due to consumption of contaminated water or food. It is associated with fever and is caused by Salmonella typhi bacteria. The digestive system is affected and because of this, post-recovery would result in hunger and headaches. A low appetite might also be experienced after recovering from typhoid for a few weeks. However, one cannot skip on meals as it helps in proper functioning of the body.
A proper diet after typhoid recovery will help in bringing the lost appetite back:
- Plan small meals and have those meals kept in short intervals.
- Post typhoid, it might be hard to have heavy meals, so instead, have three to five small meals a day. Make sure those small meals are nutritious and fibrous. This will help in nourishing the body, regaining lost energy and increasing the food intake.
- Keep up a diet that has high carbohydrate intake like glucose, fruit juices with sugar, rice, barley water, coconut water etc.
- Have a protein-rich diet that is highly digestible like mashed potatoes, avocado’s, custards, eggs, soft cooked vegetables etc.
- Including almonds, roasted chana, and walnuts will be an additional to health benefits.
- The diet after typhoid recovery should be full of proteins, vitamins and fats as it will in gaining energy and also for a speed recovery.

Food Items To Limit
Butter,Ghee, Vegetable oil, Chilies, Spices, fiber rich foods, pastries, fried snacks, deserts, thick cream soups should be avoided as they effect the recovery. Infection will reduce the capacity of your digestive system and the medicines used for the treatment may kill all the helpfull microbes, so foods rich in fiber and fats will irritate your stomach. And it's better to avoid high spicy foods because it will give burning sensation in the stomach.
Do's And Dont's
Do's:
- Make sure you follow your doctor's instructions for taking your antibiotics and be sure to finish the entire prescription.
- Often wash your hands with clean water and soap
- Drink more water( Min 6-8 glass)
- Drink boiled and properly filtered water
- Boil it, cook it, peel it, or forget it.
- Include good quality proteins(eggs, meat paste, fish, poultry) in properly cooked form.
Dont's:
- Avoid handling food or any other household things if there is a risk of spreading the disease.
- Don't go for heavy meals, split your heavy meals and do frequent small meals.
- Typhoid is quite common in areas with poor hygiene, so avoid roadside stalls.
Food Items You Can Easily Consume
- Cereals: Properly cooked white rice, white bread
- Pulses: Thin to normal dhal
- Vegetables: Properly cooked and mashed Potatoes, Carrots, Ashguard, Carrots
- Fruits: Banana(small),Oranges and Apple( Without skin),Tender Coconut water.
- Milk and Milk products: Yoghurt, Buttermilk.
- Meat, Fish and Egg: Boiled egg, skin out chicken, stewed/grilled fish.
- Oil: 1Tbsp/ day( Olive oil, Mustard Oil, Rice bran Oil, Canola oil
- Sugar: 2 Tsp/ day.
