Dr. GarimaGeneral Physician • 3 Years Exp.MNAMS (Membership of the National Academy) (Ophthalmology)
What you eat has a direct impact on your health. In the same manner if you are suffering from pulmonary hypertension, a good and balanced diet can be of real help. It will make sure your body gets the nutrition that it needs, while you maintain a healthy weight, and your blood pressure and cholesterol levels are also under check.
Here is a list of some simple diet tips:
- Limit your salt intake: The first and foremost rule when it comes to keeping your blood pressure in control is reducing/limiting your daily salt intake. You should also avoid eating processed foods which have sodium content in them.
- Include garlic in your diet: The sulfur-containing compounds of garlic offer a range of benefits for your health, and one of them is lowering your blood pressure. It is recommended to eat raw garlic, though eating it cooked is not a bad idea either.
- Say no to alcohol and caffeine: It is well-known that both alcohol and caffeine increase the level of your blood pressure. So, you must always go for non-caffeinated and non-alcoholic drinks instead.
- Limit fluid content: Patients suffering from pulmonary hypertension are advised not to drink more than two-liter fluids in a day. However, you will have to check with your doctor about this and let him guide you correctly depending on your medical condition.
- Include more iron in your diet: Iron plays a great role in lowering your blood pressure, so pick food items that are high in iron like red meat, dark leafy green vegetables, mushrooms, and many other.
