What is Emotional abuse?
Emotional abuse is also termed as psychological abuse. Emotional or mental abuse takes place when a person is subjugated by another person. This manipulation may be in terms of abusive words or even actions and ultimately results in the birth of imbalance or psychological malfunctioning in the victim. These mental dysfunctioning includes regular traumas, anxiety disorders, or depression. The cause of mental abuse may have its roots in behaviour on the part of parents or a romantic partner implementing in order to grab control over the person. Some of the common emotional abuse that takes place in regular life are verbal abusive attacks, bullying, isolation or loneliness, humiliation and rejection from a person. However, violence from life partner also results in the growth of tremendous emotional breakdown and finally give rise to psychological turnovers.
The biggest disadvantage of psychological abuse is that the victim refrains to disclose it and keep it inside them. This deliberate attempt at preserving mental abuse is because of a fear that haunts them of being disbelieved by others. Often children come across abusive behaviour from parents at home and teachers in school that outcomes to heavy pressure on the part of the child and ultimately mental imbalance to live a regular social life.
Patients suffering from mental abuse should be treated sensitively. Some symptoms in a person that proves they are or have been suffering from mental abuse include frequent traumas, the person not talking to people freely and avoiding social life, a sense of fear and also aggression. Added to that, the victim will also suffer from sleep disorders, excessive anxiety, obsessive and compulsive habits and tendency towards committing suicide. Mental abuse should never be kept within and if on realising a person suffering from any such mental state, immediate consultation of doctor is necessary.
How is the treatment done?
The treatment for mental abuse is one of the most challenging tasks for doctors. Psychologists or psychiatrists deal with the coordination and functioning of the mind that is extremely sensitive and equally risky. The fear of disclosure in the victim or the patient makes it almost impossible for another person to realise his/her underlying mental condition. Thus until and unless, the victim themselves comes up for a treatment, determining the severity of the condition is very difficult. While in case of physical abuse, signs and symptoms reveal the truth, physical abuse is nearly impossible to judge. The best possible way is to understand the need of undergoing a treatment and further consult a therapist.
Primarily, the therapist or the psychologist would ask for a detailed knowledge of the entire scenario of the patient. These are especially skilled with the ability to judge the condition of the patient. However, often several tests are coordinated to look evaluate the exact condition of the patient and where he stands.
In accordance with the result of the test and evaluation by the therapist, the required therapy is prescribed. The variations of therapies include individual therapy, journaling, group therapy, psychopathy talk, somatic therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy.
Depending on the condition, the therapist may advise you for a visit to a psychiatrist. Many cases require treatment that amalgamates both psychological medicines and counselling therapy. Medicine in one hand provides temporary relief and control over the mental state while therapies escalate the confidence level of the patient to fight against and stand up.
Who is eligible for the treatment?

Are there any side effects?
Therapies are extremely helpful and tend to produce extraordinary results within minimum time. They are not accompanied by any side effects. In turn, they enhance the confidence level to a great extent that makes a person mentally strong and capable enough to fight and lead a healthy social life.
On the other hand, medicines prescribed by psychiatrists have certain side-effects. These medicines take control over the nervous system dealing with the ratio of hormones associated with the mind. On the other hand, intake of these medicines results in the growth of unnecessary fat in the person. Even the person may tend to experience more hunger during the span of medicines.
What are the post-treatment guidelines?
Psychological treatment takes time. Regular or frequent sessions are necessary and following the guidelines advised by the counsellors are even more important to get the desired result.
Also, if you are prescribed with any medicine by the doctor, never put a stop to it all at a sudden, a constant consultation with the psychiatrists would be helpful as you can update him on the condition and he could figure out your requirement and likewise increase or decrease the dosage of medicine.
At the same time, practising yoga or meditation at home will help enhance the treatment procedure.
How long does it take to recover?
The time for recovery entirely depends on the severity of the condition of the patient. It is a long-term process. You are supposed to take several sessions of therapies whereas medication may extend up to one or more year. The doctor reduces the dosage of the medicine gradually with time and if you tend to stop the medicine all at a sudden, probability of experiencing relapse episodes increases.
What is the price of the treatment in India?
The treatment is subjected to the severity of the patient. Also, various therapists have their own individual charges. Thus the cost of the treatment is entirely subjected to the doctor, the therapist and medicine he prescribes.
Are the results of the treatment permanent?
This is a long time treatment process. Proper medication and sessions of successful therapies may result in permanent recovery. However, there must be chances for further relapse that calls for the necessity of maintaining a healthy mental and physical life.
