Diet Chart For gallstone

The gallbladder is a pear-shaped organ below the liver that collects and stores bile, a fluid concerned with the digestion of body fats. Although the gallbladder isn't necessary for a body's functioning, the appearance of gallstones can cause bloating, severe abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting in some people. In such extreme cases, the gallbladder needs to be surgically removed. Once the surgery has been done, doctors advise that patients should maintain a healthy diet in order to facilitate smooth functioning of the body. However, these dietary practices can also be followed prior surgery to reduce the pain from gallstones being developed.

The gallstone diet includes:

  1. Steer clear from oily, fried and/or fatty foods. These foods have a high-fat content and activate the gallbladder to release more bile required to digest the extra fat worsening the symptoms of gallstones and enhancing the pain.
  2. Consumption of low-fat dairy products such as skimmed milk, fat-free yoghurt and tofu instead of the conventional whole milk and full-fat yoghurts has been advised.
  3. Gradually increase the consumption of high-fibre foods such as beans, pulses such as legumes and whole-grain products such as bread, pasta and rice.
  4. Drink plenty of fluid such as water and green tea, the recommended intake of fluids is around two litres per day.

Dinner (8:00-8:30PM)Broken wheat upma 1 cup+ 1/2 cup green beans subji
Monday
Breakfast (8:00-8:30AM)Mix veg Poha 1 cup+ 1/2 cup low fat milk.
Mid-Meal (11:00-11:30AM)1 Portion fruit( Include different colored fruits. Don't stick with particular one.
Lunch (2:00-2:30PM)3 Chappati+ 1/2 cup cluster beans subji+ Fish curry(100g fish) 1/2 cup.
Evening (4:00-4:30PM)1 cup coffee + 2 biscuits ( Nutrichoice or Digestiva or Oatmeal.)
Dinner (8:00-8:30PM)2 Roti / chappathi+Ridge guard subji 1/2 cup.
Tuesday
Breakfast (8:00-8:30AM)Vegetable Oats Upma 1 cup+ 1/2 cup low fat milk.
Mid-Meal (11:00-11:30AM)plane low fat Yoghurt with raw vegetables / grilled vegetables -1 cup
Lunch (2:00-2:30PM)1/2 cup rice + 2 medium chappati+1/2 cup Kidney beans curry+ Snake guard subji 1/2 cup.
Evening (4:00-4:30PM)1 cup boilled channa+ light coffee 1 cup.
Dinner (8:00-8:30PM)2 Roti/ chapati+ 1/2 cup mix veg curry
Wednesday
Breakfast (8:00-8:30AM)2 Slice brown.+1 slice low fat cheese+1Boiled egg white+ 1/2 cup low fat milk.
Mid-Meal (11:00-11:30AM)1 Portion fruit( Include different colored fruits. Don't stick with particular one.
Lunch (2:00-2:30PM)Veg pulav rice 1 cup+ 1/2 cup Soya Chunk curry+ 1/2 cup Low fat curd.
Evening (4:00-4:30PM)1 cup light coffee + 2 wheat rusk.
Dinner (8:00-8:30PM)2 roti/ Chapathi+ Ladies finger subji 1/2 cup.
Thursday
Breakfast (8:00-8:30AM)4 Idli + Sambar 1/2 cup/ 1 table spoon Gren chutney/ Tomato Chutney
Mid-Meal (11:00-11:30AM)green gram sprouts 1 cup
Lunch (2:00-2:30PM)3 Roti+1/2 cup salad + Fish curry ( 100 gm fish)+ 1/2 cup cabbage subji.
Evening (4:00-4:30PM)1 Portion fruit( Include different colored fruits. Don't stick with particular one.
Dinner (8:00-8:30PM)2 Roti / chappathi.+ Tomato subji 1/2 cup.
Friday
Breakfast (8:00-8:30AM)Chappati 3 + 1/2 cup potato masala
Mid-Meal (11:00-11:30AM)1/2 cup boilled black channa
Lunch (2:00-2:30PM)1 cup rice+ 1/2 cup Dhal+ Palak subji 1/2 cup+ 1/2 cup low fat curd.
Evening (4:00-4:30PM)1 Portion fruit( Include different colored fruits. Don't stick with particular one.
Dinner (8:00-8:30PM)Broken wheat upma 1 cup+ 1/2 cup green beans subji
Saturday
Breakfast (8:00-8:30AM)Methi Parata 2+ 1 tbs green chutney.
Mid-Meal (11:00-11:30AM)plane Yoghurt with raw vegetables / grilled vegetables -1 cup
Lunch (2:00-2:30PM)1 cup rice+ chicken curry( 200 gm chicken+ 1 cup cucumber salad.
Evening (4:00-4:30PM)1 Cup light coffee+ Brown rice flakes poha 1 cup.
Dinner (8:00-8:30PM)Wheat dosa 3 + 1/2 cup Bitter guard subji.

Food Items To Limit

  1. Foods that are fried, like french fries and potato chips
  2. High-fat meats, such as bacon, bologna, sausage, ground beef, and ribs
  3. High-fat dairy products, such as cheese, ice cream, cream, whole milk, and sour cream
  4. Pizza
  5. Foods made with lard or butter
  6. Creamy soups or sauces
  7. Meat gravies
  8. Chocolate
  9. Oils such as palm and coconut oil
  10. Skin of chicken or turkey

Do's And Dont's

Do's:

  1. Have low fat diet to prevent hyper secretion of bile juice
  2. Increase the intake of refined carbohydrates intake like rice, white bread, pasta, refined wheat flour to increase cholesterol saturation in the body
  3. Also increase the intake of MUFA (monosaturated fats) rich foods as they help with gallbladder cleansing, so include flaxseeds, walnuts, olives and Olive oil in everyday diet.
  4. Sources of soluble fibre foods like sprouts, fenugreek (methi) seeds help to get rid of bile acids sterols
  5. Vitamin C rich foods such as gooseberries, oranges, lemon, lime should be included as help in prevention of gall stones
  6. Several fibre rich vegetables and fruits like cauliflower, carrots, beans, broccoli, papaya, bananas, berries etc. are highly recommended
  7. Coffee can also have effect the secretion of cholecystokinin and prevent crystallization of cholesterol
  8. Total fat intake should not be more than 30 g to 45 g per day. Out of this up to 10 g should be from monosaturated rich foods.

Dont's:

  1. Avoid fatty or fried foods as they increases the secretion of bile juice
  2. Control your non-veg intake such as chicken, fish or sea foods as they are rich in cholesterol and are capable of raising the blood cholesterol levels
  3. Try avoiding alcohol as it also triggers bile secretion. Regular and binge drinking is a complete no
  4. Oral contraceptives can cause gallstones as these steroid medications effect the cholesterol metabolism
  5. Too much gap between meals or skipping meals is not at all advised, as it effects liver function resulting in impaired bile secretion
  6. Do not go on crash diets or ketogenic diets as it triggers rapid fat metabolization which also triggers bile secretion as well as raise blood cholesterol level
