How occupational therapy can help in case of a trauma

Trauma can lead to a lot of changes in the your personality, way of thinking, behaviour and communication skills as well. It’s very common in children. But in order to recover or get better, you will need the expertise and the guidance of an occupational therapist. They will help your child to relearn whatever skill they want to, make them take part in things they like to do in order to keep themselves busy, make them more independent than ever so that they can take part in different types of activities.Your child will be under the observation and they will take a note of your child’s strength and weaknesses. You must be having a lot of questions in your mind, so let’s find out more about the occupational therapists.

Where will they see your child?

If you take your child to a trauma centre, your kid will be either at the paediatric intensive care unit or any general ward. There are some cases where your child might be referred to the local services which would be very close to home or the school.

What will your occupational therapist do when you’re in the hospital?

Firstly, an OT will talk to you about your daily life and how you are following the injury. They might even ask you about your home and different stuff related to it.They might ask you about the number of steps to your bathroom or Living room and various other basic questions. The purpose of this is to make a note in how you are going to get around in your own house after the process. There have been cases where the OT even might visit your house in order to provide you his valuable advise. In order to make the daily activities easier you might be given some equipments in order to raise your confidence and to make your activities easier.

What is occupational therapy all about?

The different types of activities that you might have to perform when you’re at the hospital are as follows:

- You’ll be given equipments to make your life easier and to gain confidence.
- You might be prescribed to use a wheelchair in order to make your daily life easier.
- Talking about your daily life which consists of basic things which are very important to you.
- Proper therapy in order to get over the trauma and to improve.

The time taken for recovery is different for each and everyone. It will take a longer period of time for a brain injury but in some cases all it might take is just a couple of weeks. What we should always keep in our mind is that intervention and a regular therapy session is very much important and will make a difference in the process of healing or recovery. The main aim of the operational therapist is to make sure that you do the normal things which you do regularly as safe and quickly as possible and to recover from the trauma to be perfectly fit and fine, both from the inside and the outside.
