How To Treat Acidity And Gastritis Problems Through Ayurveda?

Gastric and acidity are the common problems which are heard very frequently by most of the people. Though these are not severe diseases, still they create an uncomfortable feeling for those who are suffering from these problems. Acidity and gastritis are the same where acidity means hyperacidity. It is a condition where the secretions of hydrochloric acid became excessive and only in the stomach which in turn leads to the irritation on the gastric lining.

Symptoms To Detect Gastritis:

To detect the condition of acidity or gastritis, these common symptoms will let the people identify.

  1. Abdominal pain in the upper part
  2. The decrease in the appetite levels
  3. Diarrhea
  4. Constipation
  5. Hiccups
  6. Heartburn
  7. Nausea

How does Ayurveda help to treat acidity or gastritis?

In Ayurveda, this condition is known as Urdhva Amlapitta where ‘amla’ means sour and ‘pitta’ refers to the dosha of the same name. In this condition, the Pitta dosha (biohumor representing Fire and Water elements) whose seat is in the stomach and the digestive fire tends to over-secrete leading to acidity in the body.

This acidity (which is a byproduct of Pitta’s sharp, hot and acrid qualities) causes many symptoms like a burning sensation, loss of appetite, queasiness, indigestion, bloating, etc.

Ayurveda is one of the ancient ways of treatments that helps the person to get cure from any disorders by natural methods, which also includes yoga and exercises. Ayurvedic treatment is just not limited to medicines, but also the physical activities that help in keeping body healthy and fit.

Ayurvedic treatment of Chronic Gastritis involves the reduction of aggravated body energies and the restoration of the digestive fire using cooling herbal preparations and Pitta-pacifying diet. Ayurvedic techniques of reducing tension and stress are also proven to be effective in treating this condition. Here are some of the popularly employed ayurvedic methods to treat gastritis and acidity problems.

  1. Diet change – The foremost important thing in acidity or gastritis problems, is there should be a change in diet. Reduce or avoid spicy foods, tea, coffee, sour foods, chilies as these will be increasing the acidity levels in the stomach.
  2. Food to consume – In this condition, it is better to avoid citrus food and intake grapes, pumpkins, bitter gourd, pomegranate, cucumber, melons, fresh vegetables and juices.Reduce the salt intake also.
  3. Maintain time – It is important to eat on time and should never skip meals because if the eating method is healthy, then it can be cured soon.
  4. Observe closely-Eat morning breakfast only if the motions are clear in the morning. Avoid overeating.
  5. Control emotions – It is most important to control emotions by avoiding stress along with anger.
  6. Sufficient sleep – The most important thing is to have a perfect sleep at the same time care should be taken that a gap of 2 hours is maintained between meals and sleeping time.
  7. Instant relief – Taking approximately 200 to 500 ml of fresh coconut water two times per day will get relieved from this problem.

Above mentioned are some of the remedies to prevent acidity or gastritis. Once there is a problem, then some medicines need to be taken along with Panchakarma procedures.

1. Virechana Karma - Medicated procedure of inducing loose motions to pacify the aggravated Pitta. This has amazing results in mitigating the symptoms of the disease.

2. Vasti Karma - Medicated oils, ghrtas or decoctions are administered through anal route. This pacifies the aggravated vata dosha and pitta dosha.

Ayurveda treatment has wonderful results in pacifying gastritis. If dinachara and rituchara principles are followed, gastritis and hyperacidity are avoided.
