Hyphema: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects

Last Updated: Oct 31, 2019

What is Hyphema?

Hyphema is a type of collection of blood inside the back area of the eye. The blood gets accumulated in the cornea of the eye and it may cover most of the iris and the pupil which might result in complete vision impairment. This condition causes a lot of pain in the eye and immediate medical attention is needed if you are diagnosed with this condition. Sometimes this condition might result in bleeding, teary eyes and a sense of redness in the cornea. The other symptoms of this condition are that you face a lot of sensitivity to light, blurry or clouded vision and might result in complete vision impairment. The most common cause of this condition is due to the abnormal blood vessels on the iris and hyphema is also caused due to a past eye infection or intraocular lens problems. Artificial lens implants are a common cause for hyphema. The artificial lenses might cause various eye infections that results into this condition. There is a sense of irritation in the eyes as well that causes difficulty in managing day to day work. If this condition is left untreated or unrecognized then it might also lead to eye cancer.

How is the treatment done?

The treatment procedure first requires tests that determine the extent or the severity of this condition. This condition may arrive due to a nerve disorder or maybe from a past injury. Several other factors are taken into account before the treatment procedure begins such as the age of the patient, tolerance to certain medications. Common treatment procedures of this condition involve application of eye drops, patches to avoid direct exposure to sunlight, adequate rests and limited eye movement so that there is no strain on the affected eye. For severe cases of the condition of hyphema, you may require to have a surgery. The medical experts use microsurgical instruments to clear out the clotting of the blood that takes place in your eye. The surgery helps to remove any form of hemorrhage that you might face in the cornea of the eye. The faulty nerves in the eyeball restrict the proper blood flow that is required in the eye. Age is an important factor in this surgical process as in the early ages one might not be advised for surgery. If you have already undergone past injuries and surgeries associated with the eye then your medical expert might chose some other form of diagnosis to avoid complications in the procedure.

Who is eligible for the treatment?

If you can see the nerves in your eye appear to be unusually red and you face sensitivity to light along with pain and irritation then you are eligible for this course of treatment. You might also face difficulties in vision which can result into complete vision impairment. If you face these symptoms then contact your medical expert as soon as possible.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

If you are over aged (senior citizen) or if you have other health issues that can cause complications after the surgery then the medical expert might avoid the procedure for hyphema surgery. Some medications might also be avoided if the immune system cannot tolerate these medicines.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects for the course of this treatment may involve you having pain and some swelling in your eye. Recently after the surgery you might still face some problem in moving your eye and it can make your eyes watery if you spend too much time in areas where you have excessive light exposure to your eye.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

The post treatment guidelines involve you to take the eye drops regularly as prescribed by your medical expert. You should also restrain yourself from moving your eye too much as it might cause damage to your nerves in the cornea. You should also perform eye exercises as you are advised to smooth the blood flow of your eye nerves. You should avoid washing your eyes for 2 days after the surgery as well.

How long does it take to recover?

You should be able to continue your day to day activities within a week after the surgery. If you are obtaining only medicinal treatment then you should expect the symptoms to be eliminated within 2 weeks of the treatment.
