Hello,

I am Dr. Richika Sahay Shukla, I am specialized in IVF. In this, we do all kind of cycles, preferable we want to go with the self-eggs, means own eggs and own sperm of the couple. But what happens in many patients when IVF cycle doesn't succeed? All the patients who are suffering from ovarian failure or poor egg responders or very elderly females, more than 45 years of age, in these we have to opt for donor eggs. The patients usually get very disappointed. But, we can't change destiny, in fact, we have to fight destiny. We try to hunt the donor, who resembles you both partners. We try to match the colour of the patient, hair skin, eye colour. Then facial features also we try to match. The donor has to be 21-28 years old. It has to be a young donor so that you can get good eggs.

Now coming to the legalities. We have to follow all the legal things and the donor has to sign off on the paternal egg that she is donating with the husband. Thirdly, psychological counselling also being done for the donor so that the donor should be stable. We see all her habits and what is her reproductive history, what is sexual history, what is medical history and the donor has to be fit in all these ways before we take her for the cycle. So, these are some of the things that we do for the patient. The success rate, whenever you are opting for it, the success rate increases as your own. The success rate in the donor cycle goes up to 70-80%. So, this can be used for the couples who have recurrent IVF cycle.

So, these are the things which we do for the donor egg cycle. What happens when you opt for a donor egg cycle? We try to give you oral contraceptive pills so that your period and donor cycle comes on the same day. 1 and 2 days up and down is okay for us. Then we give doses to the donor to stimulate her eggs. Then the egg is picked from her. And then we take your spouse sperm on the day of the pick-up. So, by the help of the donor, you are able to conceive and you are able to deliver a normal child. Ultimately, the child will learn only those things which you want them to learn. With this, you are able to enjoy the motherhood that you have been trying from a couple of the years. In advance maternal case, we have to go for the donor egg cycle. 2nd option is where we can freeze the eggs.

From abroad also, they freeze the donor eggs and then they can give the donor eggs to you. But India, right now, there are no such ART banks, in fact, in ART clinics when we have extra donor eggs, we can freeze those eggs and the patient can use it for subsequent use. If that time they are not able to decide, like sperm is very bad and they are not able to decide they want to make the donor embryo. In this case, the half egg that we have retrieved from the donor, we can put the sperm and we can make embryo out of your spouse. And the 2nd half, we can freeze. This we can use later on if you don't have the pregnancy and by putting donor eggs, make donor embryo. So, it can be used to the best of your advantage by this kind of techniques. We also have extra embryos whenever we go for donor eggs. So, when you have the first child at the time of the first egg transfer then you want to have another child, so the kept or the frozen one in the lab, we can use after 3-4 years. So, this means that you have got the child from the same donor because of the freezing techniques.

Thank You.
