About

Topic Image

Inflammatory bowel diet is basically a stomach disease which is of two types, that is Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis. Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory chronic disease which affects the entire digestive tract leading to abdominal pain and malabsorption whereas Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disease which affects the colon and large intestine. The diet requirements for both the disease are different and should be properly confirmed by the doctor.

Diet for Ulcerative colitis:

  1. The patient should follow a low residue diet to avoid more bowel movements, such as green leafy vegetables, beverages filled with caffeine.
  2. One should decrease alcohol consumption as well as sugary drinks, food, sodas.
  3. Omega-3 fatty acids should be incorporated in the patient’s diet like eggs, salmon.
  4. Patients should indulge eating by breaking the meals in smaller portions.
  5. Patients can take supplementary diet drinks if required.

Diet for Crohn’s disease:

  1. To avoid abdominal pain, patients should avoid residue food along with nuts.
  2. Fresh fruits and vegetables should be taken in less amount.
  3. The lactose-free diet should be properly followed.
  4. Meals should be broken into smaller parts and consumed and supplementary diet can be followed if the patient is finding difficulty in solid food.
