Kawasaki Disease Symptoms

Skin rashes are associated with a many childhood problems like chicken pox, measles, German measles, Scarlet fever etc. But when some skin rashes noted in regions of stomach, genitals, and chest with fever for at least five days, redness in eyes, swelling and redness of the fingers, there may be occurrence of Kawasaki diseases as compared to other skin problems or disease. Such disease is causing blood vessel inflammation in children that is medically termed as vasculitis and creates redness or rashes over sensitive skins.

Lips are most sensitive are of human body as they are made of soft and delicate skin. Lips can easily cracked or split due to weather, excessive licking of the lips, and use of certain medications. When children are experiencing dryness, flaking, scales, sores, swelling, redness, bleeding like conditions associated with lips, then they should seek medical attention of dermatologist. There are chances of Kawasaki disease if other symptoms like fever for more than five days, rashes on skin, etc. are also observed in child along with redness and drying of lips.

A condition where observation of tongue is providing details like swelling, white coating and big red lumps, it is medically termed as Strawberry tongue. Such symptoms associated with strawberry tongue are indicating towards occurrence of some underlying disorders. The swelling of tongue is result of inflammation of blood vessels due to Kawasaki disease, allergies, Scarlet fever, etc.. If a child had a high fever, rash, peeling skin, chapped lips, swelling in hands and feet along with strawberry tongue, it is indicating Kawasaki disease and needs immediate attention.
sore, irritated throat
A child not able to swallow food, faces problem in opening the mouth, severe sore throat is at higher risk of Kawasaki disease. Such disease is making the throat scratchy, burning, dry, tender and irritated due to inflamed blood vessels of neck area. The other causes like viral or bacterial infection, allergies, exposure to irritants, muscle strains etc. are associated with sore and irritated throat. But if such symptom lasts for more than a week time for a child, further medical diagnosis and treatment is required.

Skin is also giving warning signs related to person’s health problems and guide medical practitioners or providers for treating such underlying conditions or disease. Extremely dry lips with skin rashes and fever in a child are signs of Kawasaki disease occurring generally in the age of 6 months to 5 years. This disease is inflaming the blood vessels and reducing supply of oxygen to the body parts such as hands and feet. This making such parts look like purple –red due to lack of oxygen supply and/or blockage of small arteries in children.

A swelling of lymph node is considered as a sign of body that if fighting against infection of viruses or bacterias. Such swelling of lymph nodes can be easily observed or felt at neck and groin region. Consultation with pediatrician is must for children who are experiencing swelling of lymph glands along with tenderness for more than five days, enlargement of glands to such extent that skin overlying them turning red or purple, fever higher than 101 degree Fahrenheit, strawberry tongue etc. as these may be signs of Kawasaki disease.
Redness in the eyes
Eyes of children should require an attention if there a red or pink color of the white areas of eyes without any pus or yellow discharge, increased frequency of watery eyes, and persistent irritation felt in eyes. Such types of symptoms are linked to an eye infection or inflammation occurring due to conjunctivitis or swollen and dilated blood vessels respectively. This condition of eye is also known as Bloodshot eyes or Red eyes and some causes like Kawasaki disease are medical emergencies while some are causes that does not an emergency.
Enlarged glands, especially in the neck
A condition medically termed as lymphadenopathy for abnormally enlarged lymph nodes or glands which are associated with inflammatory response of body to trap circulating viruses or bacterial and kill it. The enlargement of lymph glands is occurring when there is an upper respiratory infection, viral infection or bacterial infection, strep throat, etc. If a child comes with swelling of supraclavicular, epitrochlear and popliteal glands swelling or enlargements, then there is a chance of Kawasaki disease, a rare childhood diseases associated with swelling of lymph node and need immediate medical treatment.
Irritated throat, inner mouth, and lips
Inflammations of blood vessels of areas like throat, mouth and lips can cause irritation and disturbs person’s ability of eat, talk and sleep. If such irritation felt by children of age group of 6 months to five years then medical attention is recommended for such children as it may be occurrence of Kawasaki disease. Such irritation accompanied by other symptoms like fever, swollen or enlarged lymph glands, redness in eyes, joint pains lasting for more than five days should be treated with desired treatment of oral or iv antibiotics as it can affect the heart.
Swollen, bright red “strawberry tongue”
There are many causes like Kawasaki disease, vitamin b12 deficiency, etc. behind such type of swollen, bumpy tongue, known as strawberry tongue. A feeling of irritation and pain are experienced by children during movement of tongue or consumption of food. This type of swelling in tongue is arising due to inflammation of blood arteries and can be treated by medical practitioners with the intake of anti-inflammatory drugs and injection for increased immunity power.
Joint pain
In the whole body, tiny blood vessels are circulating and supply oxygen and essential nutrients. A child complaining about pain in his or her joints like knee joint, hands joint, shoulder joints etc., it is considered as warning sign for his or her parents. Such pains of joints are generally occurring in Kawasaki disease because in this disease, blood vessels are getting swollen and inflamed. This disease is not limited its affect to blood vessels of joints but it is mainly damaging heart vessels causing coronary artery problems if left untreated for longer period of time.
