Increase in blood glucose levels is called diabetes. There are different types of diabetes, and most people are familiar with type-1, type- 2 and gestational diabetes, but one of the unfamiliar conditions of diabetes is brittle or liable diabetes.

What is brittle diabetes?

In this condition, frequent fluctuations in blood sugar levels are experienced. Yes, if you find that your blood sugar levels fall too often or are too high to control, it might not be a simple case of uncontrolled diabetes, but brittle diabetes. It can disrupt the quality of life and in such a case the patient may require frequent hospitalizations to manage these fluctuations.

What causes brittle diabetes?

The causes of brittle diabetes are not definite, but some of the possible reasons for fluctuations are:

Signs of brittle diabetes

Signs of brittle diabetes are often misunderstood as signs of unmanaged diabetes, but you should check with your doctor if you observe the following signs frequently:

  • Frequent fluctuations in blood sugar levels without any specific reason

  • Experiencing other complications like ketoacidosis

  • Dizziness and weakness

  • Trembling hands

  • Blurred vision

  • Increased thirst, urination and hunger

Who is at risk of developing of brittle diabetes?

Having type 1 diabetes, increases your risk of brittle diabetes, as it is often associated with fluctuations. Other factors that increase your risk of brittle diabetes are:

  • Gender: Females are a greater risk as compared to males.

  • Metabolic disorders: Hormonal imbalances, being overweight or hypothyroidism are associated with a higher risk.

  • Age: The chances of brittle diabetes are higher during 20s or 30s, as compared to late 40s.

  • Physiological conditions: High level of stress or depression is associated with its  increased risk.

In case you are having brittle diabetes or are at a risk, it is important to follow the advice of your doctor and maintain a healthy lifestyle to avoid any complications.
