Mesotherapy: Treatment, Procedure, Cost and Side Effects
Last Updated: Nov 15, 2024
What is the treatment?
Mesotherapy is a non surgical technique used to rejuvenate and tighten the skin with the use of injections containing vitamins, enzymes, hormones and plant extracts. It is also used to remove excess fat in areas like the stomach, thighs, buttocks, hips, legs, arms and face as well as reducing cellulite. People often go for mesotherapy to treat alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss. The middle layer (mesoderm) of skin is injected with certain substances using very fine needles. Underlying issues that cause skin damage, like poor circulation and inflammation, are corrected by the use of this technique.
How is the treatment done?
Doctors inject different substances depending on the condition of the patient. The substances may be solutions like herbal extracts, vitamins and minerals, enzymes such as collagenase and hyaluronidase, hormones like calcitonin and thyroxin and prescription medicines like vasodilators and antibiotics. The doctor may or may not apply a numbing medicine to your skin. A series of injections will be delivered using a special short needle. A mechanical gun may be used to deliver many injections in a row. You may have to undergo several sessions of mesotherapy to achieve the desired results. Initially, you will be given injections every 7-10 days. Once your skin starts to improve the time period between the sessions will become two weeks and slowly a month. To treat alopecia, natural plant extracts, vitamins, or medicines like minoxidil and finasteride are injected into the head. It improves blood circulation, delivers nutrients to the hair and corrects hormonal imbalances in and around the hair follicle.
Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)
If you want to remove cellulite or extra fat from your thighs, stomach, buttocks, hips, legs, arms and face; you can go for mesotherapy. The treatment can also help you reduce wrinkles and lines as well as lighten your pigmented skin. Also, if you are suffering from alopecia, mesotherapy may come to your rescue.
Who is not eligible for the treatment?
Mesotherapy must be done only in extreme cases. Mild fat on your body can be managed by consuming a proper diet and working out regularly.
Are there any side effects?
After going through mesotherapy, you may undergo temporary nausea, pain, sensitivity, itching, redness, rashes, infection, scars, bruising, dark patches of skin or bumps at the injection site. There is nothing to be concerned about. Your doctor will take proper measures to ensure that these effects do not linger on for long.
What are the post-treatment guidelines?
There is no hard and fast routine to be followed after mesotherapy but you must follow the guidelines provided by your doctor. Do not apply pressure to the injection site. Consult your doctor as soon as you feel that the side effects are causing a hindrance in your daily routine.
How long does it take to recover?
You may have to go for 3-10 sessions to achieve the results you desire. Mesotherapy is non invasive. You may return to your daily activities right away. In extreme cases, you may need a day off due to swelling or itching.
What is the price of the treatment in India?
One session of mesotherapy may cost you between ₹15000 - ₹40000 depending on the area that is to be treated.
Are the results of the treatment permanent?
The results of the treatment are mostly permanent.
What are the alternatives to the treatment?
You have the option to go for liposuction to remove excess fat. It is a surgical process that is more expensive and complicated.
