Njavarakizhi: Treatment, Cost and Side Effects

What is the Procedure?

Njavarkizhi or shashtikashali pinda swedam is a type of massage inducing sweat and relieveing stress. As the name suggests, Njavara in Malayalam stands for rice, which is also shashtikashali in Sanskrit. The rice used to grow in 60 days and is used for this treatment. It has medicinal values for which it is used for this specific type of treatment. The other part Kizhi, stand for bolus, which is called pinda in Sanskrit. The treatment is a sweat inducing treatment which uses various process for making this massage a beneficial one. The rice is grown in Kerala and the technique is practiced by Kerala ayurvedic physicians or vaidyas. The main purpose of doing this massage is for the perspiration of a body part or the whole body, whichever is required by applying certain medicinal drugs with the Njavarakizhi rice pudding dipped in the form of boluses tied in a muslin cloth. The use of milk and rice is effectively used externally which poses to be an efficient massage pudding. The mixing of milk with rice and other medicinal herbs make the mixture a pure medicinal one to deal with health ailments. Mostly the rice and other things are prepared by decoction using he necessary herbs and the rice boiled for a certain time and given temperature.

How is the treatment done?

The treatment is done by letting the person sleep in the massage table, who is to be massaged and then the rice in the form pudding, made boluses in a thin muslin cloth. And it is then used for massaging the person asked part or full body. It is a good sign to make the person relax and make him comfortable while giving the massage. It is the swedam part, which comes to effect. It means fomentation, sudation, or perspiration. This ayurvedic treatment is very essential in giving unparalleled relief from pain, stress and anxiety. The rice prepared in decoctions with the milk tied to the bolus is rubbed against the body or the afflicted part of the body. It thus provides heat to the muscles, bones and joints. It provides energy to the tissues and muscles, which are undergoing degeneration and deformation. The procedure of applying the decoction and the milk after it is done in many postures. It thus generate cooling and gives muscle the time to relax. At the end, the rice paste sticking to the body is removed by coconut leaves. Lastly the body is then given another herbal oil massage and made to rest for next 30 mins.

Who is eligible for the treatment?(When is the treatment done ?)

Any person who is suffering from Sciatica, Scoliosis, Kyphosis, Perthe’s disease, Cervical myelopathy, Hemiplegia Arthritis, muscle pain, Cervical Spondylosis, Whiplash etc. It can be done at the early point of time when the person feels to take the treatment. But, its recommended to go to a good clinic and avail the treatment for Rs1000-Rs2000.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

Treatment is tend to be taken in a regular basis to avoid the problems of joints, muscles or other ailments. There is no permanency in massage. The more you take after consulting the doctor, the more beneficial it is. Human is not at all permanent, as it is literally a working machine. So, technically errors and problems may occur. So, its advisable to undertake treatment in problems related to muscles, and joint pains.

There are many other types of massage can be done for the same problems. However, it’s the uniqueness of Njavarakizhi that it takes a blend of essential oils and medicinal rice to cure this. Therefore, it’s the best part of this treatment. Otherwise, ayurvedic offers many massage techniques with different types of oils and other herbs, which constitutes working for the same problems. But, its better to take this old Kerala ayurvedic technique which never compensates on what it has productivity is.
