Onions are known to be cooling in nature and can also absorb body heat hence normally suggested to eat raw during summers. Onions are also known to reduce the chances of fatality due to overheating of the body in summer. Also, Onions, especially red ones contain a flavonoid called quercetin which is believed to have an anti-histamine effect. Histamine is the irritant that causes heat rashes so eating onions daily may help to ease these summer complaints. A 2006 British study shows that people who eat the most quercetin-rich foods (particularly onion soup in this study) have reduced their risk of thrombosis and cardiovascular disease. Quercetin has also been used to stop tumors from growing and is often used for cancer prevention.
