Diet Chart For Renal (dialysis)

Last Updated: Feb 15, 2023

About

Dialysis is the process of removing excess water, solutes and toxins from the blood in those whose native kidneys have lost the ability to perform these functions in a natural way. This is referred to as renal replacement therapy. Dialysis is used as a temporary measure in either acute kidney injury or in those awaiting kidney transplant and as a permanent measure in those for whom a transplant is not indicated or not possible.

Dialysis may be used in those with rapidly developing loss of kidney function, called acute kidney injury, (previously called acute renal failure); or slowly worsening kidney function, called Stage 5 chronic kidney disease, (previously called chronic kidney failure and end-stage renal disease and end-stage kidney disease).People with compromised kidney function must adhere to a renal or kidney diet to cut down on the amount of waste in their blood. Wastes in the blood come from food and liquids that are consumed. When kidney function is compromised it does not filter or remove wastes properly. If wastes are left in the blood they can negatively effect a patients electrolytes. Following a kidney diet may also help promote kidney function and slow progression of complete kidney failure. A renal diet is one that is low in sodium, phosphorous and protein. A renal diet also promotes the importance of consuming high-quality protein and usually limits fluids. Some patients may also need to limit potassium and even calcium. Every persons body is different, and therefore, it is crucial that a renal dietitian work with each patient to come up with a diet that is tailored to his or her needs.
