Symptoms Of Mastitis: First Signs When You Might Be Having Mastitis

If a woman feels soreness or tenderness in the breasts then it can be due to a wide variety of reasons. One of the reasons behind breast tenderness or soreness can an infection in the breasts. This infection is known as Mastitis which is caused due to the blockage of the milk ducts. If a woman experiences tenderness or soreness of breasts then she must consult the doctor immediately to determine the cause behind it. Other symptoms of mastitis are:

Swelling of the breast

Swelling of the breasts is one of the most common symptoms of mastitis. The tissue of the breasts gets inflamed due to infection leading to swelling in the breast. This infection is usually caused if a bacterium enters the milk duct through the mouth of the baby or the milk duct gets blocked. If a woman is experiencing any such symptom then she must consult the doctor immediately to avoid further complications.

Feeling of warmth in the breast

If a woman feels warmth in the breast then this is an indication of mastitis. This feeling of warmth in the breast is due to infection in the breast of the woman. This symptom is very common in women who have recently become a mother. If a woman has this symptom, she must consult a doctor immediately to look for possible treatment.

Redness of the breast (often in a wedge-shaped pattern)

Another common symptom of mastitis can be redness of the breast. This may be due to the inflammation of the breast tissue due to a bacterium that has entered the breasts. If a woman experiences this symptom then it must be reported to the doctor as the condition might worsen with time.

Feeling tired and run down

Mastitis is very common among mothers who are breastfeeding. Mastitis does not affect the milk but the infection makes the woman feel more tired than usual. If a woman feels this way, it must be reported to the doctor.

Fever and chills.

Just like any other infection, fever and chills are also experienced by women who suffer from mastitis. Thus, if a mother of a newborn baby experiences chills and fever then she must consult the doctor immediately as it might be due to mastitis. Immediate treatment of mastitis is necessary as it may worsen as time progresses and can cause a lot more complications.
