Last Updated: Jun 27, 2023

It’s is a common thought of people that their hemorrhoids are the key cause of painful bowel movements. Although hemorrhoids often cause irritation, itching, sensitivity and other discomforts around the affected area, the condition may rarely lead to pain during a bowel movement. However, the patient may attempt with Over-the-counter ointments /suppositories to relieve pain and itching during bowel movements. Adding excess fiber in food eases the pooping.

Painful Swelling or a Lump Near The Anus

A patient may suffer from painful swelling or a hard painful lump near the anus due to piles. Excess skin tags may be the result of external hemorrhoids that can be felt at the anal verge. It might cause difficulties with cleaning after a bowel movement, leading to secondary skin infections. When the condition is intolerable surgery may be advised.

Anal Itching

Hemorrhoids are either internal or external. Internal piles are found inside the rectum whereas external hemorrhoids are found below the skin surrounding the anus. When an internal hemorrhoid is prolapsed, it brings along with the mucus that can severely irritate the sensitive area around the anus causing itching. When the stool mixes with mucus, then the irritation and itching may be greater.

Mucous Discharge From The Anus

Sometimes a bulging and enlarged hemorrhoid causes leakage of mucus from the anus. This may be a sign of infection. The patient should keep the anus and the surrounding areas clean. Potassium permanganate crystals mixed water can be used for cleaning after pooping. If the mucus discharge and pain are still continuing, then the patient is advised for surgery.

Hard Lump Around The Anus

In the lower part of the digestive tract, the anus opens. An internal anal sphincter separates the anal from the rectum. When stools fill the rectum, the sphincter muscle relaxes and allows the stool passes through the anus and out of the body. When stool has passed, the external anal sphincter closes off the anus. Lumps that form around the anus can make it hard along with pain, discharge and swelling. Though anal lumps are not life-threatening, still they require evaluation. If the patient notices continuous bleeding, pain along with hardened lump, fever, he requires immediate medical attention.

Piles patient mostly experience painful anus and sometimes the area around the anus turns red and sore. Straining during defecation is the key cause for the symptoms whereas sometimes the infection causes the red and sore symptoms around the anus.
