Dear IWJWKW,
Taking risnia plus will NOT interfere with your brother becoming father. But how effective is the treatment of schizophrenia, does he earn money to support a family, does he know his responsibilities of becoming a father, etc should be the deciding factors.

What is Schizophrenia?

We all know it as a debilitating mental illness that plagues people across the globe. Schizophrenic patients often feel like they are being overtaken by situations and events that are beyond their control. They may complain of seeing people who are not there or hearing voices where there are none. This happens because the neurotransmitters in the brain of the patient do not function appropriately. There are various types, causes and symptoms of this disease.

Dear lybrate-user, All these medications are either anti depressants or Anti Psychotics. Anti Depressants like some of them you are taking are given in OCD and anti psychotics are given as Augmenters in OCD also, I am not sure about the diagnosis of Schizo affective .I need more information to comment on it. In consistencies do occur in Psychiatric diagnosis and the tests reflect what you answer or respond which are interpreted. If you can share your entire history I may be able to help you.

Schizoaffective disorder is a combination of symptoms of schizophrenia and mood disorder, such as depression or bipolar disorder. Symptoms may occur at the same time or at different times.
Cycles of severe symptoms are often followed by periods of improvement. Symptoms may include delusions, hallucinations, depressed episodes and manic periods of high energy.
People with this disorder generally do best with a combination of medication and counselling.

A family member is under treatment for schizoaffective disorder since 10 yrs. Lithium carbazepine risperidone clonazepam apripazole n ativan lorazepam for wen trouble sleeping. She has developed slowness of movement almost walks like penguin n feels rigidness tightness in hips n thigh thus trouble sitting n walking. Her psychiatrist told to do tests serum lithium n carbamazepine were under normal levels Vit b12 normal Only calcium slight lower than normal n vit d3 low Ortho consultation raised query abt extrapyramidal side effects of antipsychotic medication but psychiatrist refuted it. Ortho den gave gabapentin n mecobalamin n ca+vit d improved her walking n stiffness to an extent. I wanted to ask what is the reason for her walking problem n why did she get relief from gabapentin. We were asked to follow up after 15 days. If still stiffness n walking prob to refer neuro physician coz ortho cause was ruled out. I would like to know whats going on with her cause our docs didnt clearly explain d situation? N I cant afford to change docs.

Hi lybrate-user, I would like to say that the symptoms of slowness of movement what you have mentioned in a patient who is on Rispeidone and aripiprazole is most probably EPS (extra pyramidal Side effects) unless proved otherwise. There may be underlying or Co morbid Parkinsons disease. But in this position its difficult to diagnose as the Pt is on antipsychotic. Gabapentin has no role in decreasing antipsychotic induced slowness in movements. But its often used as a treatment of Akathesia which...more

Your doctor may prescribe lithium for long periods of time (months or years). It's important to continue treatment, even when you feel well. Lithium is not a cure, but it is able to help control symptoms and prevent relapse while you are taking it. For probable betterment by alternative, pl talk in details by booking audio or video call.

I think your daughter may be treated for Bipolar 1. I suggest you take her immediately to a counselor and treat her with talk therapy too. In her later adolescence, there are likely to be some unresolved issues that may go as far as prenatal influences. It comes up at this time seeking a resolution. But unfortunately not many are aware of this and will go untreated and compound the disorder. Both parents must also accompany her to help trace the problems encountered in childhood. There are certa...more

Discuss your symptoms with your treating psychiatrist and get the medications revised if they do not help even after taking for a month or so. Many times it is difficult for the psychiatrist to get all the symptoms under control in one go, so give him/ her time and for most the symptoms subside over a period of time. Even after say 3-6 months you still feel unsatisfied, get a second opinion. Good luck.

Dear lybrate-user, amisulpride causes constipation as it decreases speed of intestines.
I do not know your condition for which you are taking. Amisulpride causes weight gain too.
I suggest you ask your psychiatrist for ssri as most atypical antipsychotic like amisulpride causes constipation.
You do not have to worry if there are other symptoms. Simply change of medication will reverse the symptoms.
I wish you all the best.
