One strategy to treat drug dependence is long-term treatment with the same agonist drug or with a cross-tolerant drug to suppress withdrawal and drug craving. This approach is successfully used in the treatment of tobacco (nicotine) dependence (nicotine itself) and opiate dependence (methadone, buprenorphine).

Remind yourself why you quit. Focus on your reasons for quitting, including the health benefits (lowering your risk for heart disease and lung cancer, for example), improved appearance, money you’re saving, and enhanced self-esteem.

only by using strong will power and avoiding all situations where you feel like smoking, chewing tobacco/ or drugs or drinking or using drugs/ weed, avoiding friends who smoke and diverting mind by reading or chewing a gum, like nicorette and taking a walk when you crave for smoke can all help. We as psychotherapists can't comment on medication.
Kindly get a thorough body checkup done by an ent specialist
to rule out all possibilities. The ent would prescribe medication accordingly.

Dear lybrateuser,
- It is a good decision that you have decided to quit smoking, follow some tips :
- fix a date on which you want to quit, you have to quit completely, you cannot reduce it
- remove all the articles associated with it from the house or whichever place you keep them so that they are out of your reach when the urge is there
- inform friends about your decision so that they do not coax you to have one
- divert & keep your mind busy in various activities like you...more

You have to quit cold turkey because the body and mind will torture you endlessly while attempting a reduction in smoking. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged on. But don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. I don’t know what other organs could be damaged but do go for a thorough medical check-up ...more
