Last Updated: Jan 20, 2025

Benefits of yoga for gerd

The condition of GERD occurs when acid from the stomach flows back into the esophagus. The backward flow of acid leads to a feeling of heartburn and the sensation of a lump in the throat. The problem of GERD can occur either due to conditions like asthma, diabetes, and obesity or due to trouble in the digestive system. In one of the recent studies, it was revealed that stress as a lifestyle factor can lead to the problem of GERD. The most natural and promising solution to the problem of GERD is yoga.

Yoga is helpful in alleviating the problem of GERD irrespective of the factor causing this disease. There are asanas in yoga that improve the blood circulation in the digestive system which results in the fresh supply of oxygenated blood. This helps in improving the health of the digestive system and alleviating the problem of GERD. Yoga helps in releasing stress and anxiety from the body thereby limiting the production of acid in the stomach. Given below are some of the asanas of yoga that help in alleviating the problem of GERD.

Lie on your back and place your palms on the ground beside your body. Now slowly lift your legs together, without bending the knees. The aim is to raise your leg so far that the toes touch the ground just above your head. Your upper body will become perpendicular to the ground, when the pose is done right. It helps to strengthen the abdominal muscles and relief from GERD symptoms.

Child’s Pose

Get into the diamond pose, but instead of holding onto the posture, slowly bend the upper body, so that your forehead rests on the ground in front of you. Extend your hands over your head and spread them on the ground. This pose is especially beneficial, since it provides almost instantaneous relief from the symptoms of GERD.

Conclusion

In addition to yoga, a person suffering from the problem of GERD must avoid those foods which act as a trigger for the condition. Food products which are high in cholesterol must be avoided as they may worsen the problem of GERD. Calcium-rich food products which are very high on saturated fat like milk and cheese must be avoided as they have the tendency of flaring up the symptoms of GERD. An individual can add certain food products in their diet which are both healthy and reduce the occurrence of GERD symptoms.

Incorporating protein from sources of low cholesterol like salmon, poultry, almonds, lentils, and beans can be both healthy as well as reduce the problem of GERD. Incorporating green vegetables like kale, broccoli, and spinach in the diet can be beneficial. Fruits which are rich in magnesium, potassium, and fiber-like avocados, pears, apples, and berries can be very helpful in alleviating the problem of GERD. If a person suffering from the problem of GERD is under medical treatment then he/she should take his/her medicines regularly as they play a pivotal role along with yoga and healthy diet to alleviate the problem of GERD.
