Last Updated: Jan 20, 2025

Benefits of yoga for high blood pressure

The problem of high blood pressure is very common in today’s scenario. 7 out of every 10 people are suffering from the problem of hypertension. If someone is looking for a natural way to reduce the high blood pressure then doing yoga can provide the best alternative for not only controlling but also lowering the increased blood pressure level. One of the leading causes of hypertension in patients is stress.

The asanas of yoga help the mind and the body of the patient to relax thereby giving positive therapeutic effect in hypertension. Yoga, when done regularly, brings about positive changes in the lifestyle, weight, and stress levels of a person. If a person doing yoga chooses the appropriate yoga asanas then it activates the parasympathetic nervous system whose responsibility is to provide rest and repair to the body.

The enhanced parasympathetic activities due to regular yoga permit the nervous system to become more balanced thereby reducing the blood pressure naturally. If used correctly yoga can prove to be a great therapy in patients suffering from the problem of hypertension. Given below are the asanas of the yoga that help in the reduction and management of high blood pressure in patients.

Conclusion

Besides doing yoga regularly for the reduction of the high blood pressure levels a patient needs to bring in some changes in their lifestyle and diet. For properly managing blood pressure level a person must exclude certain foods from their diet. Eating junk food can increase the blood pressure level; foods rich in omega-6 oils must be avoided.

Frozen pizzas, pickles, canned soups, food containing excessive sugar must be avoided. Salt intake of the person must also be avoided. Instead of regular salt, the patient should incorporate low-sodium salt in their diet. Instead of the foods that increase blood pressure level, the patient must incorporate foods that help in reducing the blood pressure level. A person must include fruits, like Kiwi, watermelon, and bananas in their diet.

Oats, leafy green vegetables must be added to the diet of the patient. Alcoholism is also one of the causes of high blood pressure thus a person suffering from hypertension must not consume large amounts of alcohol. Apart from bringing these changes, the patient must never forget to take his/her medication for hypertension. Regular yoga therapy along with medicines, changes in the diet and lifestyle can bring about immense positive effects in lowering and controlling the blood pressure level of a patient.
