Benefits of yoga for sciatica

It is believed that nearly 5 percent of the adults suffer from the problem of sciatica. There are various factors which contribute to the development of this condition ranging from hobbies to a job which an individual performs. Individuals suffering from the sciatica pain consume over the counter painkillers. However, taking pain killers for a long duration can lead to various side effects that pose a threat to the overall well-being of an individual. With an increased awareness with respect to the benefits which yoga provide naturally more and more people are turning to yoga for relief in pain related to sciatica.

There are several studies with positive results which support the use of yoga in sciatica. There are asanas in yoga that assist in stretching piriformis muscle and lower back which results in releasing some of the pressure on the sciatic nerve. The spine and the core muscles get strengthened through yoga thereby providing relief in pain. The tension in the hamstring muscles also gets relieved through regular practice of yoga. Bridge Pose

The bridge pose helps to stretches the spine, lengthens the hip flexors and provides relief from lower back pain and also helps to prevent herniated disc. It can help tone the sciatic nerve which soothes irritation and eases pain. Start the pose lying on your back with knees bent and arms by your side. Push your arms firmly to the floor and slowly lift your hips and buttocks off the ground. Keep your thighs parallel to your feet and clasp your hand and bring it beneath your pelvic bone, pressing firmly on the ground. Hold for 30 seconds.

Child’s Pose

This pose strengthens the spine, stretches the thighs and ankles, and provides relief from back pain. Start by sitting on your heels on the floor with the toes flat. Slowly bend forward, lifting your buttocks from your heels and stretch your hands out to touch the floor. Try to press your chest against your thighs and hold the pose for 1-2 minutes.

Half Spinal Twist

This pose improves spinal flexibility and mobility. Start by sitting with your legs outstretched. Bend the left leg at the knee and place your left foot over the right leg and fold the right leg as its resting on the ground. Breathe in, twist your body and grab your left ankle with your right hand and place your left hand on the ground behind you for support.

Knees-To-Chest Pose

Start the pose by lying on your back on the floor. Slowly bring your knees up to your chest and wrap your arms around them. Breathe regularly and gently press your knees and thighs against your chest. Your shoulders should rest comfortably on the ground. You can gently rock back and forth to give your spine a soothing massage. This pose is extremely helpful for lower back pain and releasing tension.

Nature presents us with foods which are not only good for the overall health of an individual but they also help in alleviating the symptoms of certain diseases. In addition to yoga, there are certain food products which when added to the diet help in reducing the inflammation caused by sciatica. Adding tomatoes to the diet can be good and healthy due to the presence of several vitamins and minerals. Tomatoes also boast antioxidants which help in reducing the inflammation.

For waging a battle against sciatica pain it is essential that cellular health is restored. It can be achieved by adding green leafy vegetables in the diet. These vegetables also benefit the overall health of an individual as they are packed with vitamins K, C, and A. Including extra virgin olive oil in the diet helps not only in reducing the inflammation but it also promotes healing. Addition to Bok Choi to the diet can prove to be a game changer as it contains approximately 70 distinct antioxidants which help in alleviating the pain associated with sciatica. Medicine prescribed for the treatment of sciatica must be taken regularly as it is essential for the treatment of the condition.
