Benefits of yoga for scoliosis

Any person who is suffering from scoliosis may explain that this condition is not just about the curvature of the spine it involves severe backaches, headaches, and shortness of breath among various other problems. In the people suffering from scoliosis, yoga provides a natural approach for the treatment of discomfort associated with scoliosis. Due to scoliosis, the body of a patient comes into a habit of holding itself asymmetrically which results in experiencing pain. Yoga in this condition helps in stretching out the muscles that have overworked and strengthen the muscles that have gone weak due to the condition of scoliosis. Through yoga, the muscle system of the body can be trained to support the spine in an aligned and healthy way.

There are different yoga asanas with specific benefits that help in scoliosis. Yoga also improves the breathing of a patient suffering from scoliosis which results in increasing the awareness of the body. By yoga, a person suffering from scoliosis learns to support their spine through an effortless posture along with reducing the strain which is being exerted on the muscles. Yoga helps a patient in finding a more balanced and optimal alignment of the spine. With the development of better posture pain and discomfort associated with scoliosis disappears. Given below are some of the yoga asanas that are helpful in scoliosis.

Mountain Pose

This yoga pose helps improve balance and bone strength. Start by standing with the heels separated slightly and the big toes touching. Try to lift yourself up first by the balls of the feet, then the toes. Try to distribute your weight evenly and settle them back flat. Lift the pelvic bone towards the navel. Keep the chin parallel to the ground. Take fluid breaths slowly.

Tree Pose

The Tree Pose helps relieve stress and improves balance and posture. Start by standing straight. Shift the weight on the left foot as you use the right hand to reach down and hold the right ankle. Try to lift the right foot and place the sole on your left thigh. Stretch the spine as you draw the pelvis inwards. Place the palms in front of the chest as you push the shoulder blades together. Take steady, slow breaths. And repeat the same with the other foot.

Cat/Cow Pose

This yoga pose strengthens and stretches the tendons and muscles of the spine by opening up the spaces that exist between the vertebrae. Start by kneeling such that the hands and shoulders form one line and the knees and hips form one line. Bend your head downwards, and as you inhale, lift the head and arch your lower back. Exhale as you release your neck.

Child’s Pose

The Child’s Pose helps relieve stress and relaxes the muscles. Start by sitting on your heels and stretch the hands and arms towards the front. Bend forwards such that you chest almost touches your knees. Keep stretching your arms and breathe deeply. Try to stretch and lengthen your spine and back muscles. Try to hold the position for 3-5 minutes and continue to take steady breaths.

Conclusion

Yoga provides relief in scoliosis in a more conventional and natural way. But yoga needs to be supported with proper nutritional diets and other treatment to observe a faster recovery in a patient. There have been studies that indicate that certain nutritional deficiencies, hormone imbalance, and low levels of some minerals also lead to the progression of scoliosis. Deficiency of Vitamin D3 plays an important role in the development of scoliosis. Incorporating foods rich in Vitamin D3 helps the body in absorbing calcium which necessary in enhancing the density of the bone.

A patient suffering from scoliosis must avoid foods such as pork, excessive sugar, soda, white flour, soy products, and alcohol. The amount of citrus fruit consumed must also be restricted to a minimum. Incorporating organic meat, fresh vegetables and non-citrus foods can be good for the patient. People who suffer from scoliosis often complain about digestive distress thus eating foods that are easy to digest is recommended. A patient can take others over the counter vitamin and mineral supplements for fulfilling nutritional deficiency. Regular yoga along with proper diet may yield positive results for the patients suffering from scoliosis.
