Last Updated: Oct 20, 2024

What is the treatment?

There is no synonym for elbow pain.

How is the treatment done?

The elbow is that part of your body which allows you to easily throw, lift, swing and hug. All these activities can be performed because the elbow is not a simple joint. This means that there are a lot of things which can go wrong with your elbow. The elbow joint is formed at that point where three bones come together namely the upper arm bone called humerus, the ulna and the radius.Elbow pain commonly occurs as a result of tendinitis that affects the inner or outer elbow. Attached with a pain in your elbow joint are a variety of reasons. It may be caused due to trauma, arthritis and bursitis. Other reasons which lead to a pain in your elbow can be a broken arm, dislocated elbow, golfer’s elbow, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteochondritis dissecans, sprains and strains, tennis elbow, trapped nerves, throwing injuries and many more. This long list of a wide variety of reasons behind your elbow pain show just how vulnerable the elbow is to injuries apart from the sports injuries.

Who is eligible for the treatment? (When is the treatment done?)

Most of the elbow injuries require a regular visit to the orthopedic. One of the most common causes behind your elbow pain can be sprain and strain. In order to treat the pain arising due to this reason, RICE treatment is used which stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. Medications and creams can be used to prevent swelling and provide instant relief. Stretching exercises are to be performed in this case.

Tennis elbow aka lateral epicondylitis is an extremely painful inflammation of the elbow joint which occurs due to repetitive stress. The pain is most commonly located on the outside of the elbow but it can radiate down the back of the forearm. Most of the tennis elbow injuries are treated without surgeries with the help of rest, ice, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines, physical therapy, shock wave therapy, steroid injections among many others.

If the reason behind your elbow pain is bursitis, then the problem might be a lot more serious than what is anticipated. Rest, pain medication and icing the joint can help relieve the pain. Antibiotics become necessary in the treatment. Doctors employ the use of corticosteroids to relieve pain, inflammation and swelling. Surgery is also performed to remove the damaged bursae.

Who is not eligible for the treatment?

Since the causes of the elbow pain are many, the treatment available is also bigger in number. As most of the treatment can be performed by exercises and physical therapy, everyone is eligible for the treatment of elbow pain. Only those with severe pain and inflammation can opt for surgery.

Are there any side effects?

As the causes are many, the treatment depends upon the cause attached to the elbow pain. The treatment is available to everyone in the normal scenario.

What are the post-treatment guidelines?

Surgery brings along various side effects. Most common everyday activities cannot be performed once a person undergoes surgery. However, if the pain can be treated via physical exercises of stretching or applying medicine to the given hurt area then the side effects have no role to play.

How long does it take to recover?

Complete rest should be given to the affected joint area. Any exertion can result in the enhancement of pain or it might increase the chances of a surgery. For patients who have already undergone surgery, bed rest, regular ice compression, proper medication, massages and physical exercises recommended by the doctor should be performed regularly.

What is the price of the treatment in India?

Elbow pain can go away within a week or it might take around a month if the cause behind it is a fracture. In case of surgery, the time to recover increases. With regular exercises, patients can recover quickly.

Are the results of the treatment permanent?

If the pain can be cured or reduced with the help of medications and exercises, then the cost to be born is minute. However, if the treatment involves surgery then the cost can go up to 2,00,00 INR.

What are the alternatives to the treatment?

There are chances of the problem to occur again if proper care and rest is not met. With regular exercises and massages, the chances of the problem to reoccur reduce tremendously.
