Hi I have a concern before proceeding for a marriage proposal to a lady. The lady does not have any of these issues. The lady has following family history: Kindly let me know whether there is a risk of inheriting any of these in our child. 1. Her father has a problem in lips. It is defective. This is also observed in her only brother. Although she does not hv this issue. 2. Her brother's only child was born with missing thyroid gland. 3. Her only maternal uncle was detected kidney failure at the age of 20 and died of it. Although he did not have any record of consuming alcohol and he used to lead a healthy life. Kindly let me know whether there is a risk of inheriting any of these symptoms in our future child if I marry the lady. Thanks a lot in advance.

Lip and thyroid disease can be inherited if it is a dominant gene character and details need to be discussed with a genetic counselor Two of the genes involved in this form of the condition are PAX8 and TSHR. These genes play roles in the proper growth and development of the thyroid gland. Mutations in these genes prevent or disrupt normal development of the gland. The abnormal or missing gland cannot produce normal amounts of thyroid hormones.

It is very difficult to answer your question. Since you don't have any commitment to the lady whose proposal you have, and you are so vigilant about your future generations, you can take your own descision. These problems though have genetic impact it can not be predicted that your future child born will develop these problems or not.
